I have lived at my home for the last 30years. Moving seemed like such a daunting task. Juan Sanchez and his crew were absolutely outstanding. From the moment they arrived, they were professional, organized, and ready to work. Juan led the team with confidence and made sure everything ran smoothly. The entire crew worked very efficiently, but never rushed in a way that felt careless. They handled our furniture and boxes with great care, protected our belongings, and made sure everything was placed exactly where we wanted it. Everyone on the team was respectful, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile to help. Maribeth was also wonderful throughout the entire process. She provided excellent communication, answered all of our questions, and made everything feel seamless and stress-free from start to finish. Her coordination and customer service truly made a difference and helped the move go exactly as planned. Overall, I’m extremely impressed with Juan Sanchez, his crew, and Maribeth. Their professionalism, efficiency, and attention to detail made this move such a smooth and positive experience. I really appreciate the care and hard work from everyone involved. I would absolutely recommend Southbay Moving Systems Inc. to anyone looking for a reliable and professional moving company. Thank you all again for such a great experience!

I had lived in the same location for over 27 years and was completely unprepared for the moving experience. My Southbay Moving coordinator was Maribeth Gunderman and she was a lifesaver. I needed guidance every step of the way and she was always patient and helpful whenever I was overwhelmed. She rescheduled my move for me several times when I ran into complications with relocating out of state, always providing options where she could help me get past each obstacle. The moving crew was professional, helpful, and efficient and got my possessions where they needed to be with little difficulty. But mostly, I cannot say enough good things about Maribeth Gunderman. Whenever I needed to be talked through a moving crisis, she was there to listen and help until I was ready to move on, and ultimately, we got it done. Many thanks.

Maribeth Gunderman, Sales Manager at Southbay Moving Systems, is a rare find in the business world – superbly competent, kind and patient. My move involved several destinations, rescheduling three times, along with my remote location and difficult driveway access. Ms. Gunderman knew exactly how to handle all of it, often assuring me of Southbay’s experience and expertise. A part of me was skeptical of her promises until her management and the excellent crew who did the work performed above and beyond what she had led me to expect. As a business owner myself, it often occurred to me that Ms. Gunderman is an absolutely invaluable asset to the company. Southbay Moving delivered perfect service with the true caring and attention to detail that we middle-aged folk have come to believe is a thing of the past. At Southbay it is NOT! The moving crew also brought competence and caring. They were personable, and worked more quickly than any crew I’ve ever seen. (I’ve moved across the country six times.) They are not just guys the company picks up, but long-term employees. It shows. I would recommend Southbay Moving Systems for any moving job. Maribeth truly understands how stressful moving is. She not only managed the move but also "managed" my stress, not with empty promises and platitudes, but with an explicit plan, down to the smallest detail and a crew capable of delivering on them. I could have asked for nothing more. She actually made moving almost enjoyable!

We had an outstanding experience with South Bay Movers during our move from the San Francisco Bay Area to New York. A huge thank you to Miguel, Jose, and Mike for making what could have been a very stressful move feel smooth and well-managed from start to finish. The team was professional, punctual, and extremely careful with our belongings. They handled everything with attention to detail, clear communication, and a great attitude throughout the entire process. Nothing was rushed, nothing was careless, and they consistently checked in to make sure things were done exactly the way we wanted. Long-distance moves require trust, and Miguel, Jose, and Mike absolutely delivered. Our items arrived on time and in great condition, and their teamwork and work ethic really stood out. If you’re looking for a reliable, professional moving company with people who genuinely care about doing the job right, I highly recommend South Bay Movers and especially this crew. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Very professional personnel at ALL levels. From Maribeth who was personable, concise, and very responsive as my first contact with Southbay. To Carlos who came by and took an accurate assessment of our home and all it's contents. Then the 3 strong and polite movers who were on time, knew how to wrap, tape, and move all the items in our house, so that each item arrived at our new home ready to put in place.

Juan and his team were fantastic. The other reviews are all so positive that I was skeptical, seemed too good to be true, but everything went great.

From California to Tennessee

Why Californians Choose Southbay for a Tennessee Move

We’ve moved California families since 1991, working out of Salinas on the Central Coast. Tennessee is more than 2,000 miles away and stretches nearly 400 miles from Memphis to Knoxville, so the details matter: which city, which week, and what happens if your closing date moves. You get one coordinator from the first call to delivery day, with no brokers in between.

  • One point of contact: the person who builds your estimate is the person you call on delivery week.
  • Interstate authority: moves outside California run as an authorized agent of National Van Lines (USDOT 2967929, MC 1213784).
  • Help where you need it: full or partial packing, furniture disassembly, and storage if your Tennessee home isn’t ready when the truck is.

Nashville and its suburbs sit about 2,220 miles from Salinas, and Knoxville, in the east, is the long haul at about 2,406. California to Tennessee Moving Cost

How Much Does It Cost to Move From California to Tennessee?

A full-service move from California to Tennessee typically costs $3,800 to $8,500. Your price comes from an itemized inventory of what you’re actually bringing.

  • One-bedroom apartment: about $3,800 to $5,200
  • Three-bedroom home: about $5,500 to $7,200
  • Four- or five-bedroom home: about $7,000 to $8,500 or more

What moves the number: shipment weight, how far east you’re going (Knoxville is nearly 400 miles past Memphis), stairs and long carries, packing and crating, and specialty items like pianos or gun safes. Hillside lots around Chattanooga and East Tennessee, or narrow rural drives, may need a smaller shuttle truck for the last stretch. Summer and month-end dates run 15–25% higher than mid-week, mid-month moves.

How Interstate Moving Works

How a Southbay Interstate Move Works

Every out-of-state move is covered by federal rules from the FMCSA. Here’s how ours runs, and the two choices on your paperwork that matter most.

1

Free survey

We walk through your home in person or by video and build an itemized inventory, so the estimate matches what you actually own.

2

Written estimate

You get the price in writing before you book, with packing, crating, storage and any access charges listed line by line.

3

Pack and load

Our own crew wraps furniture, packs what you’ve asked us to, and checks off every item on the inventory as it goes on the truck.

4

Deliver and check

Your goods arrive in the delivery window on your paperwork. We unload, set up furniture, and you check items off the same inventory.

Know your estimate type

Binding estimate
The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
Non-binding estimate
The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
Binding not-to-exceed
You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.

Know your protection level

Released value (no extra charge)
Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
Full value protection
We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

The federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move explains all of this in detail.

Why Californians Move to Tennessee

What Changes When You Move From California to Tennessee

Homes cost less than half as much. The typical Tennessee home is worth about $331,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). Nashville is about $426,000, and Memphis about $152,000.

No tax on your paycheck. Tennessee has no personal income tax on wages, and the old Hall tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed in 2021. Coming from California, where rates reach 13.3%, that’s the biggest change for most households.

Sales tax is where Tennessee collects. The state rate is 7%, and counties and cities can add up to 2.75%, so the average combined rate is about 9.6%. Groceries get a lower 4% state rate, but local tax still applies on top.

Low property taxes. Homeowners pay about 0.52% of their home’s value a year on average.

Moving a business? Tennessee taxes companies through a 6.5% excise tax on net earnings and a 0.25% franchise tax on net worth, with a $100 minimum. Our commercial movers handle office and warehouse relocations.

Four real seasons. Expect hot, humid summers, spring storms and occasional winter ice, with more snow in the eastern mountains.

After You Arrive

Your First 30 Days in Tennessee: License and Car

Tennessee gives new residents 30 days for both the driver’s license and the car. Californians have one extra step, so start the paperwork before you leave.

Request your California driving record

Tennessee asks drivers transferring from California to bring a Motor Vehicle Record from the California DMV. Order it before you move so it’s ready at your appointment.

Get your Tennessee license within 30 days

Visit a full-service Driver Services Center with proof of citizenship or lawful presence, your Social Security number and two proofs of Tennessee residency dated within the last four months. With a valid California license, you’ll only need a vision screening.

Title and register your car within 30 days

Apply at your county clerk’s office with your California title or registration, proof of identity and residency, and your lender’s name and address if you still have a car loan.

No emissions test

Tennessee’s state emissions testing ended in January 2022, and Nashville’s Davidson County program ended in February 2022, so there’s no smog step before you register.
