Columbus, the state’s capital and largest city, is about 2,465 miles from Salinas and 2,245 miles from Los Angeles. Southwest Ohio is the shortest drive: Cincinnati is about 2,396 miles from Salinas and 2,176 from LA, with Dayton just behind. From the Bay Area, the northern route on I-80 makes Toledo the closest, at about 2,392 miles from San Jose. Akron and Cleveland are the longest hauls, at about 2,573 and 2,552 miles from Salinas. You get the price in writing before you book, with packing, crating, storage and any access charges listed line by line.
Pack and load
Our own crew wraps furniture, packs what you’ve asked us to, and checks off every item on the inventory as it goes on the truck.
Deliver and check
Your goods arrive in the delivery window on your paperwork. We unload, set up furniture, and you check items off the same inventory.
Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.
Know your protection level
- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

Why Californians Move to Ohio
What Changes When You Move From California to Ohio
Homes cost about a third as much. The typical Ohio home is worth about $246,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). In Columbus and Cincinnati it’s about $243,000 to $246,000, and in Cleveland about $116,000.
A flat state income tax, plus a city tax. Starting in 2026, Ohio taxes nonbusiness income at a flat 2.75% above the first $26,050. Most Ohio cities also charge their own income tax on wages, usually based on where you live and work. Columbus and Cleveland both charge 2.5%, and some school districts add one more. Even together, that’s well below California’s top rate of 13.3%.
Property taxes are higher. Ohio homeowners pay about 1.36% of their home’s value a year on average, roughly double the California rate. On a much cheaper house, the bill often still comes out lower.
Sales tax: the state rate is 5.75%, and counties add their own. Combined rates run up to about 8% in the big metros, including Franklin and Cuyahoga counties.
For businesses: Ohio has no corporate income tax. Instead, the Commercial Activity Tax charges 0.26% on gross receipts over $6 million a year, so most small businesses owe none. See our commercial moving service if you’re bringing a company with you.
Four real seasons. Expect humid summers and cold, gray winters, with lake-effect snow east of Cleveland. If you’re moving between December and March, leave some flexibility in your delivery dates.

Your First 30 Days in Ohio: License, Title and Plates
Ohio gives new residents 30 days. The clock starts when you take a job, sign a lease, buy a home or enroll a child in school, and in that window you need to switch your license, title and registration. The title has to come before the plates.
Get your Ohio driver’s license
Bring your unexpired California license plus proof of identity, legal presence, Social Security number and Ohio address to any deputy registrar license agency.
Get an out-of-state vehicle inspection
An $8 VIN inspection (form DPS 1373) is done at a deputy registrar agency, a participating Clerk of Courts title office or a participating dealer. Drive the car there.
Transfer your title at the Clerk of Courts
Ohio titles come from the county Clerk of Courts title office, not the BMV. Bring your California title and the inspection form.
Register and get plates (and E-Check near Cleveland)
With your Ohio title in hand, register at a deputy registrar. In Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties, most cars need a passing E-Check emissions test before they can be registered.
