How Far Is Nevada From California?
Nevada splits into two very different moves. Northern Nevada is close to the Bay Area: Reno is about 250 miles from San Jose over I-80. Southern Nevada is a straight run up I-15 from Southern California, about 270 miles from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, or about 490 miles from Salinas. Driving time to most Nevada cities is about 7–8 hours (most people do it in one day).

How Much Does It Cost to Move From California to Nevada?
A full-service move from California to Nevada typically costs $2,800 to $7,500. Your price comes from an itemized inventory, not a guess.

What moves the number: the weight of your shipment, stairs or long carries at either end, packing and crating, specialty items like pianos, antiques or gun safes, and timing. Summer and month-end dates run 15–25% higher than mid-week, mid-month moves. Steep driveways in the Reno hills or tight access at a Las Vegas condo can call for a smaller shuttle truck, which adds cost, so we check access at both ends before we quote.

We walk through your home in person or by video and build an itemized inventory, so the estimate matches what you actually own.
Written estimate
You get the price in writing before you book, with packing, crating, storage and any access charges listed line by line.
Pack and load
Our own crew wraps furniture, packs what you’ve asked us to, and checks off every item on the inventory as it goes on the truck.
Deliver and check
Your goods arrive in the delivery window on your paperwork. We unload, set up furniture, and you check items off the same inventory.
Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.
Know your protection level
- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

What Changes When You Move From California to Nevada
Housing costs less. The typical Nevada home is worth about $441,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). Las Vegas sits around $417,000, while Reno is pricier at about $572,000.
No personal income tax. Nevada doesn’t tax wages, pensions or retirement withdrawals, while California’s top rate is 13.3%. Property taxes are also low, around 0.5% of a home’s value per year on average.
Businesses still pay state taxes. Nevada has no corporate income tax, but it isn’t tax-free for companies. Businesses with more than $4 million in Nevada gross revenue pay the Commerce Tax, at a small rate that depends on the industry, and most employers pay the Modified Business Tax, 1.17% of wages above $50,000 a quarter. Sales tax is higher than you might expect. The statewide rate is 6.85%, and it reaches 8.375% in Clark County (Las Vegas and Henderson).

Las Vegas: The biggest landing spot for Californians, about 270 miles from Los Angeles. Jobs center on the resorts, conventions and the growing health and logistics sectors, and Nellis Air Force Base is on the north side of the valley. The typical home is about $417,000.
Henderson: Southeast of Las Vegas, with newer master-planned neighborhoods and the Raiders’ headquarters and practice facility. The typical home is about $478,000.
Reno: About 250 miles from San Jose, with four real seasons and Lake Tahoe under an hour away. The University of Nevada, Reno and Caesars Entertainment’s headquarters are here. The typical home is about $572,000.
Sparks: Reno’s next-door neighbor and the closer commute to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center in Storey County, home to Tesla’s Gigafactory Nevada and big data center campuses. The typical home is about $534,000.
Carson City: The state capital, about 220 miles from San Jose, with a quieter pace and quick access to Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley. The typical home is about $501,000.

After You Arrive
Your First 30 Days in Nevada: Car and License
Nevada gives new residents 30 days to get a Nevada driver license and register their vehicles, and the DMV handles both in one visit. Line up these steps first so you only go once.
Switch to Nevada car insurance
You need proof of a policy from a Nevada-licensed insurer. The DMV doesn’t accept out-of-state insurance.
Pass an emissions test, if your area requires one
Cars based in the Las Vegas Valley and the Reno, Sparks and Washoe Valley area need an emissions inspection report before registration. Most other parts of the state, plus newer cars in their first few registrations, are exempt.
Get a VIN inspection
At the Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno and Carson City offices, drive through the VIN inspection station outside the main building before your appointment. At rural offices it’s done during registration.
License and registration in one trip
Bring your California license, proof of identity and Social Security number, two proofs of your Nevada address, your California registration and plates, and your insurance card. Drivers 21 and older with a valid U.S. license usually skip the written and road tests.

Does Nevada really have no income tax?

Is it better to move to Las Vegas or Reno?
It depends on what you’re after. Las Vegas is cheaper (a typical home is about $417,000 versus about $572,000 in Reno) and has hot summers that regularly pass 100°F. Reno sits at about 4,500 feet, gets real winters, and is a short drive from the Bay Area. If you’re moving to Reno between November and April, plan around winter storms on I-80 over Donner Summit, which can bring chain controls and delays.
