I have lived at my home for the last 30years. Moving seemed like such a daunting task. Juan Sanchez and his crew were absolutely outstanding. From the moment they arrived, they were professional, organized, and ready to work. Juan led the team with confidence and made sure everything ran smoothly. The entire crew worked very efficiently, but never rushed in a way that felt careless. They handled our furniture and boxes with great care, protected our belongings, and made sure everything was placed exactly where we wanted it. Everyone on the team was respectful, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile to help. Maribeth was also wonderful throughout the entire process. She provided excellent communication, answered all of our questions, and made everything feel seamless and stress-free from start to finish. Her coordination and customer service truly made a difference and helped the move go exactly as planned. Overall, I’m extremely impressed with Juan Sanchez, his crew, and Maribeth. Their professionalism, efficiency, and attention to detail made this move such a smooth and positive experience. I really appreciate the care and hard work from everyone involved. I would absolutely recommend Southbay Moving Systems Inc. to anyone looking for a reliable and professional moving company. Thank you all again for such a great experience!Posted on Google![]()

I had lived in the same location for over 27 years and was completely unprepared for the moving experience. My Southbay Moving coordinator was Maribeth Gunderman and she was a lifesaver. I needed guidance every step of the way and she was always patient and helpful whenever I was overwhelmed. She rescheduled my move for me several times when I ran into complications with relocating out of state, always providing options where she could help me get past each obstacle. The moving crew was professional, helpful, and efficient and got my possessions where they needed to be with little difficulty. But mostly, I cannot say enough good things about Maribeth Gunderman. Whenever I needed to be talked through a moving crisis, she was there to listen and help until I was ready to move on, and ultimately, we got it done. Many thanks.Posted on Google![]()

Maribeth Gunderman, Sales Manager at Southbay Moving Systems, is a rare find in the business world – superbly competent, kind and patient. My move involved several destinations, rescheduling three times, along with my remote location and difficult driveway access. Ms. Gunderman knew exactly how to handle all of it, often assuring me of Southbay’s experience and expertise. A part of me was skeptical of her promises until her management and the excellent crew who did the work performed above and beyond what she had led me to expect. As a business owner myself, it often occurred to me that Ms. Gunderman is an absolutely invaluable asset to the company. Southbay Moving delivered perfect service with the true caring and attention to detail that we middle-aged folk have come to believe is a thing of the past. At Southbay it is NOT! The moving crew also brought competence and caring. They were personable, and worked more quickly than any crew I’ve ever seen. (I’ve moved across the country six times.) They are not just guys the company picks up, but long-term employees. It shows. I would recommend Southbay Moving Systems for any moving job. Maribeth truly understands how stressful moving is. She not only managed the move but also "managed" my stress, not with empty promises and platitudes, but with an explicit plan, down to the smallest detail and a crew capable of delivering on them. I could have asked for nothing more. She actually made moving almost enjoyable!Posted on Google![]()

We had an outstanding experience with South Bay Movers during our move from the San Francisco Bay Area to New York. A huge thank you to Miguel, Jose, and Mike for making what could have been a very stressful move feel smooth and well-managed from start to finish. The team was professional, punctual, and extremely careful with our belongings. They handled everything with attention to detail, clear communication, and a great attitude throughout the entire process. Nothing was rushed, nothing was careless, and they consistently checked in to make sure things were done exactly the way we wanted. Long-distance moves require trust, and Miguel, Jose, and Mike absolutely delivered. Our items arrived on time and in great condition, and their teamwork and work ethic really stood out. If you’re looking for a reliable, professional moving company with people who genuinely care about doing the job right, I highly recommend South Bay Movers and especially this crew. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.Posted on Google![]()

Very professional personnel at ALL levels. From Maribeth who was personable, concise, and very responsive as my first contact with Southbay. To Carlos who came by and took an accurate assessment of our home and all it's contents. Then the 3 strong and polite movers who were on time, knew how to wrap, tape, and move all the items in our house, so that each item arrived at our new home ready to put in place.Posted on Google![]()

From California to Pennsylvania
Why Californians Choose Southbay for a Pennsylvania Move
We’ve moved California families since 1991, working out of Salinas on the Central Coast. A move to Pennsylvania crosses the whole country, so it pays to have one company that knows your inventory, your dates and your new address. You get one coordinator from the first call to the last box, with no brokers in between.
- One point of contact: your coordinator handles scheduling on both coasts, including Philadelphia row-house streets and Pittsburgh hillsides that call for planning ahead.
- Interstate authority: moves outside California run as an authorized agent of National Van Lines (USDOT 2967929, MC 1213784).
- Help where you want it: full or partial packing, crating for fragile pieces, and storage if your Pennsylvania closing date moves.

Philadelphia sits at the far end of the state, about 2,966 miles from Salinas and 2,713 from Los Angeles. Harrisburg, Lancaster and the Lehigh Valley fall in between, at roughly 2,865 to 2,938 miles from Salinas. A typical timeline from packing day to delivery is about 7–10 days.

California to Pennsylvania Moving Cost
How Much Does It Cost to Move From California to Pennsylvania?
A full-service move from California to Pennsylvania typically costs $3,800 to $8,500. Your price comes from an itemized inventory of what you’re actually bringing.
- One-bedroom apartment: about $3,800 to $5,200
- Three-bedroom home: about $5,500 to $7,200
- Larger homes or full packing: $8,500 or more
What moves the number: the weight of your shipment, how far east you’re going (Philadelphia is about 300 miles past Pittsburgh), packing and crating, and access at the new place. Narrow Philadelphia streets, rowhome stairs and steep Pittsburgh driveways can mean a long carry or a smaller shuttle truck for the last stretch, so mention them up front.
How Interstate Moving Works
How a Southbay Interstate Move Works
Every out-of-state move is covered by federal rules from the FMCSA. Here’s how ours runs, and the two choices on your paperwork that matter most.
Free survey
We walk through your home in person or by video and build an itemized inventory, so the estimate matches what you actually own.
Written estimate
You get the price in writing before you book, with packing, crating, storage and any access charges listed line by line.
Pack and load
Our own crew wraps furniture, packs what you’ve asked us to, and checks off every item on the inventory as it goes on the truck.
Deliver and check
Your goods arrive in the delivery window on your paperwork. We unload, set up furniture, and you check items off the same inventory.
Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.
Know your protection level
- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.
Before your move you’ll receive the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move. It explains all of this in detail.
Why Californians Move to Pennsylvania
What Changes When You Move From California to Pennsylvania
Homes cost far less. The typical Pennsylvania home is worth about $287,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). In Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, typical values are around $232,000 to $235,000.
A flat state income tax, plus a local one. Pennsylvania taxes income at a flat 3.07%, compared with California rates that reach 13.3%. Most Pennsylvania towns and school districts also charge a local earned income tax, and Philadelphia’s is the biggest: a 3.735% wage tax for residents starting July 1, 2026. Check the local rate before you pick a neighborhood.
Retirement income is largely tax-free. Social Security isn’t taxed, and neither are most pension and retirement-plan payouts once you’ve retired under the plan’s rules. That’s a big reason retirees look at Pennsylvania.
Other taxes. Sales tax is 6%, or 7% in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) and 8% in Philadelphia. Property taxes average about 1.26% of home value, higher than California’s rate but on much cheaper homes. For businesses, the corporate net income tax is 7.49% for 2026. Relocating an office? See our commercial moving service.

After You Arrive
Your First 60 Days in Pennsylvania: Car, License and Inspection
Pennsylvania gives you 60 days to switch your license but only 20 days to title and register your car, so start on the car paperwork soon after you arrive.
Get Pennsylvania car insurance
PennDOT needs proof of Pennsylvania insurance, showing effective and expiration dates, before it will title and register your car.
Title and register your car within 20 days
File Form MV-1 with your California title and proof of insurance. An out-of-state car also needs its VIN verified; in Pennsylvania, a certified inspection mechanic can do it.
Pass inspection within 10 days
A newly registered car must pass a Pennsylvania safety inspection within 10 days, then once a year. Philadelphia, Allegheny, Lehigh, Dauphin, Lancaster and Centre are among 25 counties that also require an annual emissions test.
Get your Pennsylvania license within 60 days
Visit a Driver License Center with Form DL-180R, proof of identity and residency, and your Social Security card. You’ll pass a vision test and surrender your California license; a valid license means no knowledge test.
