Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.

- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

Housing costs less. The typical Oregon home is worth about $493,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). Portland sits around $524,000, and Medford is closer to $404,000.
No sales tax, but a real income tax. Oregon has no state or local sales tax, so the price on the tag is what you pay. It makes up for it with an income tax of 4.75% to 9.9%. The 9.9% rate starts at $125,000 of taxable income for single filers ($250,000 for joint filers), and the 8.75% bracket starts at a low income, so many middle-income Californians pay as much or more in state income tax after the move. Compare your own numbers before you assume a tax cut.
Portland-area households can owe local income taxes too. If you live or work inside the Metro district (parts of Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties), the Supportive Housing Services tax adds 1% on taxable income over $128,000 single or $205,000 joint in 2026. Multnomah County’s Preschool for All tax adds 1.5% over $125,000 single or $200,000 joint, plus another 1.5% over $250,000 single or $400,000 joint.
Property tax is moderate. Oregon homeowners pay about 0.81% of home value a year on average (Tax Foundation), and Oregon caps how fast a home’s assessed value can rise.
Businesses pay two state taxes. Corporations pay the excise tax (6.6% on the first $1 million of Oregon taxable income, 7.6% above that), and any business with more than $1 million in Oregon sales also pays the Corporate Activity Tax: $250 plus 0.57% of taxable commercial activity over $1 million. OHSU is the city’s major academic medical center, Intel’s largest operations are just west in Hillsboro, and Nike’s world headquarters is near Beaverton. The typical Portland home is about $524,000. Your First 30 Days in Oregon: Car, License and DEQ
Oregon gives new residents just 30 days to get a driver license and to title and register a car, a much shorter window than many states. Here’s how to get it done on time.
Check whether you need a DEQ emissions test
If you live inside the Portland-area or Medford-area testing boundaries, your car must pass a DEQ emissions test before you can register it. Bring just the car; no appointment is needed. Look up your address on DEQ’s boundary tool.
Get the VIN inspection
Oregon inspects the VIN on every car coming in with an out-of-state title. DEQ can do it during your emissions test; otherwise it’s done at DMV for a small fee.
Title and register your car within 30 days
Oregon requires you to title the car in Oregon before it can be registered. Bring your California title, proof of identity and the emissions certificate if you needed one to the DMV.
Get your Oregon driver license within 30 days
Most people with a valid California license can transfer it without retaking the tests. Apply in person at a DMV office.

Can you move us to Oregon in winter?
Yes, we move to Oregon year-round, and winter dates are often easier to book and cost less than summer. The one thing to plan around is the Siskiyou Summit just north of the state line: at 4,310 feet it’s the highest point on I-5, and snow can bring chain requirements or delays. Leaving a little flexibility in your delivery date helps.
