Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.
Know your protection level
- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

Two very different housing markets. New York City is one of the few places that can match California on price: the typical home in the city is worth about $826,000, versus about $762,000 for California as a whole. Upstate is another story. The typical home in Rochester is about $240,000, Buffalo about $244,000 and Syracuse about $223,000 (Zillow, September 2026). Statewide, the typical New York home is about $525,000.
Income tax is in the same range, and higher in the city. New York’s state income tax runs from 3.9% up to 10.9% on income over $25 million, compared with California’s top rate of 13.3%. If you live in New York City, the city adds its own income tax of roughly 3.1% to 3.9% on top of the state rate.
Property and sales taxes. Homeowners pay about 1.26% of their home’s value per year on average, and some upstate counties run well above that. Sales tax is 4% statewide plus local tax, for a combined 8.875% in New York City.
Business taxes stack up in the city. New York’s corporate franchise tax is 6.5%, or 7.25% on business income over $5 million. After You Arrive
Your First 30 Days in New York: Car, License and Inspection
New York gives new residents 30 days, not 90, to switch over both your license and your car. Start soon after you arrive.
Get New York car insurance
A car registered in New York needs New York liability coverage. The DMV won’t accept a California or other out-of-state policy, so set this up first.
Exchange your license within 30 days
Go to a DMV office in person, pass a vision test, and surrender your California license. If it’s valid, you usually won’t need a road test. Your new card arrives by mail in about two weeks.
Register your car within 30 days
You’ll need Form MV-82, your original proof of ownership (no photocopies), proof of New York insurance and proof of identity. Sales tax rules apply, so check the DMV’s sales tax page before you go.
Get it inspected
New York requires a safety inspection at least every 12 months, and most cars get an emissions test at the same visit. A new registration from out of state comes with a 10-day inspection sticker, so book a licensed inspection station right away.
