Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.

- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

Why Californians Move to Missouri
What Changes When You Move From California to Missouri
Homes cost about a third of California prices. The typical Missouri home is worth about $265,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). Kansas City sits around $250,000 and St. Louis around $181,000.
A lower, flatter income tax. Missouri’s top rate is 4.7%, and it applies to almost everyone, since it starts below $10,000 of taxable income. California’s rates climb to 13.3%. Missouri also stopped taxing Social Security benefits for people 62 and older, and it no longer taxes individual capital gains, which matters if you’re selling stock or property after the move.
Two big cities add their own tax. Kansas City and St. Louis each charge a 1% earnings tax. Residents pay it on all their wages, wherever they work, and commuters pay it on work done inside city limits.
Property tax is moderate, and cars are taxed every year. Homeowners pay about 0.89% of home value a year on average (Tax Foundation). Missouri counties also charge an annual personal property tax on vehicles, based on what you own on January 1. Sales tax starts at 4.225% statewide, and local taxes bring the average total to about 8.44%.

Your First 30 Days in Missouri: License, Inspections and Title
Missouri gives new residents 30 days to title a car, and you’ll need a few papers in hand before the license office will do it. Here’s the order that works.
Get your Missouri driver license
Missouri expects you to apply as soon as you become a resident. Surrendering a valid California license waives the written and driving tests, though you’ll still take a vision and road sign test.
Get your car inspected
Every car coming in with an out-of-state title needs a VIN and odometer check at an authorized inspection station. Cars 10 or more model years old, or with 150,000 miles or more, also need a safety inspection, which covers the VIN check. If you live in St. Louis City or St. Louis, St. Charles or Jefferson County, you’ll need an emissions test too.
Get a statement of non-assessment
Because you didn’t own a car in Missouri on January 1, you won’t have a personal property tax receipt yet. Ask your county assessor (or the City of St. Louis assessor) for a statement of non-assessment, and get on the list for next year’s bill.
Title and register within 30 days
Bring your California title, your inspection forms, the statement of non-assessment and proof of insurance to a Missouri license office. If your lender holds your title, request it early, since that can take a few weeks.
