Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.
Know your protection level
- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

Homes cost less than half as much. The typical Georgia home is worth about $329,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). In Atlanta it’s about $380,000, and in Augusta about $188,000.
Georgia has an income tax, and it’s flat. For 2026, Georgia taxes income at a flat 4.99%, with a $15,000 standard deduction for single filers and $30,000 for married couples filing jointly. California’s rates climb to 13.3% at the top, so most households pay less, but it isn’t a no-tax state. Georgia’s corporate income tax is also 4.99%.
Sales tax runs a bit lower. The state rate is 4%, and counties add their own local taxes on top. The average combined rate is about 7.5%.
Property taxes are moderate. Georgia homeowners pay about 0.79% of their home’s value a year on average. File for the homestead exemption on your primary residence with your county; many counties offer bigger exemptions than the state’s.
Your car gets taxed once, up front. Instead of a yearly car tax, Georgia charges a one-time title ad valorem tax (TAVT) when you first title a vehicle here. New residents pay 3% of the car’s fair market value. More on that below.

Your First 30 Days in Georgia: License, Tag and TAVT
Georgia gives new residents 30 days for both the license and the car, and the order matters: the county tag office won’t register your vehicle until you have a Georgia license or ID.
Get your Georgia driver’s license first
Apply at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) center within 30 days of becoming a resident. Fill out the DDS online form before your visit, and bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of Georgia residency. With a valid California license you’ll take a vision exam and surrender the old card, with no written or road test.
Switch to Georgia car insurance
You’ll need Georgia liability coverage before you register. Your insurer can file it electronically, or you can bring an insurance binder.
Get an emissions test if you live in metro Atlanta
Cars registered in 13 metro Atlanta counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett, need an emissions inspection before registration. Newer models and diesels are exempt, and the rest of the state has no test.
Title and register your car within 30 days
Bring your California title, Form MV-1 and your new license to the county tag office. You’ll pay the one-time 3% TAVT plus an $18 title fee and $20 registration fee. Missing the 30-day window adds a 10% penalty on the TAVT.
