Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.
Know your protection level
- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

Housing costs less, but it isn’t cheap. The typical Colorado home is worth about $529,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). Denver is around $521,000, while Boulder runs about $938,000, close to Bay Area prices.
A flat 4.4% income tax. Colorado taxes income at one flat rate of 4.4%, compared with California’s graduated rates that top out at 13.3%. Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) caps state revenue, so in surplus years the rate can drop temporarily; it was 4.25% for 2024. Corporations pay the same flat 4.4%.
Low property tax, low state sales tax. Homeowners pay about 0.50% of their home’s value per year on average. The state sales tax is just 2.9%, but city, county and district taxes stack on top, so the average combined rate is about 7.9% and higher in many cities.

Your First 90 Days in Colorado: License, Car and Emissions
Colorado gives you two different clocks: 30 days for your driver license and 90 days for your car. You count as a resident once you take a job, start a business, or have lived in the state for 90 days.
Get your Colorado driver license within 30 days
Book an appointment at a driver license office. If your California license is valid and with you, you usually skip the written and driving tests and just take a vision test. Your California license is voided.
Switch to Colorado car insurance
You’ll need proof of a policy that meets Colorado requirements before the county will register your car.
Get a VIN verification and, on the Front Range, an emissions test
Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification (form DR 2698), done by law enforcement, a licensed dealer or an emissions station. Gas vehicles more than seven model years old need an emissions test if you live in all or part of Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer or Weld County. Fully electric cars are exempt.
Register your car within 90 days
Take your title or current registration, VIN verification, emissions results, ID and proof of insurance to your county motor vehicle office. Miss the deadline and late fees apply.

Is it a bad idea to move to Colorado in winter?
Not at all, but plan for weather. From September 1 to May 31, commercial trucks on I-70 west of Denver must carry chains, and storms can slow or close Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel approach. If you’re moving to the mountains or the Western Slope, leave a buffer day around delivery. Front Range cities like Denver and Colorado Springs are usually easier to reach. Winter dates are also often easier to book than summer.
