Know your estimate type
- Binding estimate
- The price is locked in writing before the move. You pay that amount unless you add items or services.
- Non-binding estimate
- The final price is based on the actual weight of your shipment. Federal rules cap what you pay at delivery at 110% of the estimate; any balance above that is billed later.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate or the actual weight-based price, so the estimate is your ceiling.

- Released value (no extra charge)
- Covers 60 cents per pound per item. A 25-pound TV that’s damaged would be worth $15. You must sign to choose it.
- Full value protection
- We repair the item, replace it, or pay its current market value. It costs extra, and it’s what you get by default if you don’t sign for released value.

What Changes When You Move to Arizona
Homes cost about half as much. The typical Arizona home is worth about $417,000, versus about $762,000 in California (Zillow, September 2026). Phoenix sits around $404,000 and Tucson around $319,000. Scottsdale is the exception at about $852,000.
Arizona has an income tax, just a low one. It’s a 2.5% flat rate on all taxable income, compared with California’s graduated rates that top out at 13.3%. Property taxes are low too, about 0.48% of a home’s value per year on average.
Sales tax is where you’ll notice it. The state rate is 5.6%, and county and city taxes bring the average combined rate to about 8.5%. Businesses pay a 4.9% corporate income tax, versus 8.84% in California.
The heat is real, so plan the move around it. Phoenix summer highs regularly pass 110°F, and monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30 with sudden dust storms and downpours. If you can, move between October and April. If you can’t:
- Schedule loading and unloading for early morning, and have the power, water and air conditioning on at the new place before the truck arrives.
- Carry laptops, phones, hard drives, medications, vinyl records, candles and photos in your air-conditioned car, not in a closed trailer or garage.
- Let TVs and computers sit at room temperature for a few hours after delivery before you power them on.
- Watch for monsoon storm warnings on delivery day, and keep plastic sheeting or tarps handy for an afternoon downpour.
Your clocks behave differently. Most of Arizona doesn’t observe daylight saving time, so from March to November it lines up with California time, and in winter it’s an hour ahead.

Your First 90 Days in Arizona: Car, License and Taxes
Arizona doesn’t give you a grace period. Once you become a resident, for example by taking a job here, registering to vote or staying seven months or more in a year, ADOT expects you to switch your license and registration right away. Here’s the order that saves trips.
Get Arizona car insurance
Every vehicle on Arizona roads needs Arizona liability coverage. Call your insurer before you go to the MVD.
Pass an emissions test if you live in metro Phoenix or Tucson
Cars registered in the Phoenix and Tucson areas need an emissions test before registration. Vehicles from the five newest model years are exempt, and the rest of the state doesn’t require testing.
Title and register your car
Bring your California title or registration, a completed Title and Registration Application and any lien paperwork to an MVD office or Authorized Third Party provider. Do this as soon as you become a resident.
Get your Arizona driver license
Bring your California license, proof of identity and your Social Security number, plus two documents showing your Arizona address. A valid California license usually lets you skip the written and road tests.
