Military Moving Office San Jose: Find Yours, Then Pick PPM or HHG

Type “military moving office San Jose” into Google and you’ll mostly get moving companies, not the government office that books your shipment. There’s a reason for that. The office that handles your PCS is tied to your orders and your unit, not your ZIP code. Here’s how to find the right one from the South Bay or the Monterey Peninsula, and how to choose between a PPM and a government-arranged move once you do.

Quick note on who’s writing this. South Bay Moving Systems is a private moving company based in Salinas, and our military movers have worked with service members and their families since 1991. We aren’t a transportation office and can’t approve entitlements, so this guide sends you to the official sources first and then explains where a commercial mover fits in.

Who actually handles your military move?

The office has a few names depending on branch and installation: transportation office, TMO, Installation Transportation Office (ITO), or Personal Property Processing Office (PPPO). They all do the same core job. They counsel you on your entitlements, approve a personally procured move (PPM), and book government-arranged household goods (HHG) shipments with contracted carriers.

You don’t need to find a counter on day one, though. Most moves now start online.

Step 1: Start your move online

  • Go to the Military OneSource personal property page and log in to the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) with your CAC.
  • If your shipment is set up in MilMove, the newer system, you’ll be routed there.
  • Can’t get in? The Personal Property System Response Center answers at 833-MIL-MOVE (833-645-6683).
  • New to DPS? Our walkthrough of how DPS works for your military move covers account setup and shipment tracking.

Step 2: Look up your local office

Military OneSource points service members to MilitaryINSTALLATIONS for transportation office contacts. Search by installation, ZIP code, or state, then pick the Household Goods/Transportation program to get current hours and phone numbers. Office details change, so check there before you drive anywhere.

What to have ready before your counseling appointment

  • A copy of your orders, including any amendments.
  • Your report date and any leave you plan to take on the way.
  • A rough inventory of large items, plus anything heavy like gym equipment or a piano.
  • Addresses for both ends, along with any dates you can’t move.
  • Your preferred route: PPM, HHG, or both.

Showing up with this list makes the appointment shorter and the estimate more accurate.

Transportation offices near San Jose and the Monterey Bay

Here’s the local picture by installation. Treat it as a starting point, and confirm your assigned office with your unit or in MilitaryINSTALLATIONS.

Presidio of Monterey and the Defense Language Institute

The Army garrison at the Presidio of Monterey runs a transportation office that oversees PCS household goods moves for its people. DLI students come from every branch, so ask your command which office does your counseling. It isn’t always the one closest to your barracks.

Naval Postgraduate School and Coast Guard Station Monterey

The NPS Personal Property Office in Monterey lists moves for the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, and DoD civilians. If you’re a student or staff member at NPS, or you’re assigned to the Coast Guard station on the peninsula, check there early. Its page links to inbound and outbound property information.

Fort Hunter Liggett and Camp Roberts

Fort Hunter Liggett is an Army Reserve installation, and Camp Roberts is a California National Guard training site. A lot of people there are on training or annual-duty orders, and those don’t always come with a household goods entitlement. Read your orders before you plan anything, and ask the issuing office if a move is authorized.

Moffett Field and South Bay Guard and Reserve units

Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View is home to the California Air National Guard’s 129th Rescue Wing, and plenty of reservists live across Santa Clara County. If that’s you, start with your unit’s full-time support or admin staff. They’ll tell you whether your orders authorize a move and which transportation office will counsel you.

PPM vs. HHG: which military move is right for you?

Once you’re counseled, you’ll usually pick one of three routes. A government-arranged HHG move means a contracted carrier packs, ships, and delivers your things. A PPM, formerly called a DITY move, means you move yourself and get paid for it. A partial PPM mixes the two. Our guides on planning a military household goods move and PPM basics cover the mechanics, so here we’ll stick to how to decide.

When a government-arranged HHG move makes sense

  • Your household is large and close to your weight allowance.
  • Your report date is tight and you can’t spend days packing and driving.
  • One spouse is handling the move solo while the service member is already at the new duty station.
  • You’d rather have the carrier carry the liability and use the DPS claims process if something breaks.

When a PPM makes sense

  • You’re a single DLI or NPS student whose stuff fits in a car and a small trailer.
  • You want to choose your own dates instead of waiting for a summer carrier slot.
  • You’re comfortable handling weight tickets, receipts, and paperwork.
  • You’re moving a short distance, like Monterey to the Bay Area, and can do it in a weekend.

PPM pay is based on what the government would have paid a carrier to move your weight, capped at your weight allowance. You’ll need certified empty and full weight tickets, and our guide to the military move weigh station process explains how that works. Rules and rates change, so get your actual estimate from your counselor rather than an old forum post.

The partial PPM: split the load

A partial PPM lets the carrier ship the bulk of your household while you move the rest yourself. It’s a good fit if you want to keep fragile or high-value items with you, or if you need some things at the new place before the truck shows up.

Can you hire movers for a PPM?

Yes. A PPM doesn’t mean you have to carry every box yourself. Many service members hire a moving company to pack and haul, pay the bill, and then file for reimbursement. Two rules keep you out of trouble:

  • Get your PPM approved before anything goes on a truck.
  • Get a written estimate, keep every receipt, and make sure the weight tickets match your shipment.

Military OneSource warns about rogue operators who target PPM movers, so vet any company you hire. Our checklist for choosing movers and packers in San Jose walks through what to ask before you sign.

Local factors for a military move from San Jose or Monterey

Military rules are the same everywhere, but the ground you’re moving across isn’t. A few things we see on South Bay and Central Coast jobs:

  • Peak season fills up fast. Summer is the busiest time for PCS moves, so carrier and mover calendars fill early. If your report date falls in the fall, our fall PCS timeline guide shows how to work backward from it.
  • Monterey Peninsula streets are tight. Older neighborhoods in Monterey and Pacific Grove have narrow streets and limited parking, so a smaller truck or a shuttle is sometimes the only way to reach the door.
  • San Jose apartments have rules. Many complexes require a certificate of insurance and a reserved elevator or loading window. Ask your property manager a week out.
  • Gaps between homes are common. If your lease ends before your new place opens, ask your counselor about storage authorized with your shipment, or look at private options like our climate-controlled moving and storage.
