Clovis is a city in Fresno County, California. The city was founded in 1890 and incorporated in 1912. Clovis is located 6 miles (9.7 km) east-southeast of downtown Fresno, at an elevation of 361 feet (110 m). As of the 2010 census, the population of Clovis was 105,664.
The city is widely known for its heritage as “The Gateway to the Sierra”. The nickname became even more appropriate when, in the year 1856, the first wagon train entering the Sierra Nevada mountains stopped near what is now Clovis. Within the history of Clovis, CA, the railroad arrived in 1894 and still runs through Old Town Clovis.
The city’s motto, “Pride in the Past, Faith in the Future”, is reflected in its downtown revitalization program which commenced in 2005.
